Gentle, specialist scar massage and fascial release techniques to promote healthy scar tissue formation and aid your recovery after your C-Section.
After your C-Section (Caesarian) surgery, your body begins to heal and forms scar tissue. Scar tissue is formed by layers of collagen, which is a type of connective tissue that helps to stabilise the wound. However this scar tissue is less flexible and can cause restriction or reduced movement to surrounding tissues, eg. Skin, fascia, muscle layers.
Scar adhesions can create an ‘overhang’ of tissue, may feel thicker along parts of your scar and exacerbate previous injuries in the pelvis, hips, abdomen or low back.
During an initial appointment, your case history will be taken which includes details about your baby‘s delivery, your recovery to date and any relevant health conditions and previous operations you may have had (including previous C-Sections). We will discuss your C-Section scar, any symptoms you may have associated with your scar and how it affects you.
Assessment includes:
- your standing posture, spinal movements and the impact on your scar including any restrictions or tissue tension/ pulling.
- diaphragm, breathing mechanics and abdominal separation (diastasis recti).
- your scar appearance, mobility and surrounding tissues to classify your scar for the best possible outcome.
Treatment uses a combination of gentle, specialist scar massage and fascial release techniques to your scar, abdomen, hips and low back. At the end of your consultation, you will be given a treatment plan and individualised self care advice for your scar. As well as shown self massage techniques for you to continue with at home.

In most cases, C-Section (Caesarian) Scar massage is suitable from 8 weeks post surgery. This allows enough time for the scar to form and reduces risk of infection or other complications.
Scar massage is not suitable if you have any of the following:
- redness with heat along or around your scar
- open areas along your wound
- weeping or oozing fluid from your scar
- dark bruising around your scar
- if you are pregnant
- are currently undergoing radiotherapy or have had radiotherapy within the last 8 weeks.
If you have any further questions or concerns about whether your scar is suitable for scar massage therapy, please call Lara on 07901916720 or email at hello@mumandbabyosteo.co.uk
C-Section scar massage can help to improve older scars (>2yro).
Over time, scar tissue can feel less functional and more restricted. This is due to our body protecting weaker areas and compensating to load. For example, scar tissue may form unevenly or thicker along part of your scar if you often carry your baby or toddler on one hip.
Older scars usually require more space between appointments to allow for the tissue to adapt and change after treatment.
Your comfort and modesty is important during your appointment. Your scar will need to be exposed during treatment so I suggest you wear comfortable, loose trousers which can be lowered to just below your scar.
C-Section scar massage aims to improve the appearance, sensation and function of your scar. However it will not make your scar disappear. Scar massage can also help to reduce inflammation and fluid/swelling around the tummy.
During your initial scar assessment, a treatment plan will be discussed with you regarding number of sessions and their effectiveness on your scar healing.
Usually 1x weekly sessions for 2-3 weeks are recommended. By then you should notice and feel a difference in your scar.
If required, further treatments can then be spaced as and when they are needed.
Absolutely! You will be shown a home care routine you can continue with yourself after your appointment & we will discuss any relevant resources or advice about scar healing products.
